The Rural Psychiatry Residency Program at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine is a new, fully ACGME accredited psychiatry residency program, that blends training opportunities in both rural and urban settings to bring the resident a comprehensive, well-rounded training experience. 

Residents will spend about 50% of their time in Huntington, West Virginia, and the other half in the River Cities area, located about one hour outside of Huntington encompassing Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio. Truly getting the best of both worlds, this new psychiatry residency allows the resident to experience the excitement of shaping a new psychiatry residency in a rural underserved area while also working in a well-established Psychiatry Residency Program with a full complement of psychiatry residents, experienced faculty and well-developed didactics. Residents from both programs will work alongside one another on many shared rotations, but they will also have different clinic and outpatient experiences. We strongly recommend applicants apply to both programs.

The Rural Psychiatry Residency Program is under the direction of the full-time psychiatry faculty of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. As a new program, we will start with four residents per year, which results in a friendly, close-knit and cohesive group. In addition, Huntington, West Virginia, and the River Cities are wonderful places to live, work and raise a family! Huntington is a college town, with friendly people, a fascinating history, and unparalleled outdoor recreational and leisure opportunities. Nearby Point Pleasant, West Virginia, is a historic small town located where two main rivers--the Ohio and Kanawha rivers--meet. A larger town, Gallipolis, Ohio, is a bridge ride across the river and offers additional amenities. We encourage you to learn more about all our region has to offer.
