Why Choose Our Program
The fully ACGME-accredited Marshall University Rural Psychiatry Residency is a four-year program. The program accepted its first class of residents in July 2024 and participates in the MATCH. Residents in the rural program share the same faculty, many didactics and clinical rotations as the Huntington program. The strength and depth of our Huntington program ensure the residents in our rural program will have the same outstanding educational and clinical experiences, but with additional clinic and outpatient experiences in a truly rural and underserved region. The program is designed to train the resident for practice in any field of psychiatry with an emphasis on rural psychiatry. The program will offer a rich and diverse clinical training, with enthusiastic faculty and staff. We are pleased to be a close-knit and friendly department, and we look forward to meeting our new residents!
The residents’ “home base” is at the Marshall Psychiatry Department offices and outpatient clinic, located in Point Pleasant WV, minutes away from Rivers Health Hospital. The Point Pleasant clinic is about 45-60 minutes away from the Marshall Psychiatry, Huntington, WV office. The office in Point Pleasant has a resident lounge, clinical offices, a kitchen area and classroom/educational space. Also, the Program Administrator and the Program Directors have their offices at this location.
We are proud to offer seven different clinical locations for the training of our residents. Marshall Outpatient office and Rivers Health hospital in Point Pleasant WV are in a truly underserved area for mental health and psychiatric care. With no other psychiatrists in the county or those nearby, the resident will truly appreciate the nature of providing care to the underserved. Residents will have rotations in internal medicine, family medicine, neurology, and emergency department at Rivers Health hospital in Point Pleasant. Residents will also spend about 50% of time in Huntington, West Virginia, which is home to an amazing array of psychiatric care and facilities, ensuring our residents will be well trained and confident to practice in any psychiatric setting.
The residents will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of community service activities. This has included participation in a stuffed animal drive through the Point Pleasant Rotary Club, a suicide awareness event at Rivers Health, a career fair at Hannan High School, and a booth at the Mason County Fair. Additionally, with the help of Dr. Tayengco at Rivers Health, the residents have organized a monthly cancer support group.
The residency is enhanced by Marshall's Child and Adolescent and Geriatric Psychiatry fellowships. Marshall also offers an Addiction Fellowship for those completing a psychiatry residency.
The residency program also offers an Academic Psychiatry Track, where residents will have hand on experience in education and research in preparation for a career in academic psychiatry. Areas of educational focus include medical student education, both preclinical and clinical as well as residency education. Residents will also have opportunities in research projects and scholarly pursuits, in addition to those offered to all psychiatry residents.
