AMCAS Policy Regarding Criminal Background Checks

Immunization Requirements

Medical Student Illicit Drug and Alcohol Screening Policy

Substance abuse is not appropriate for medical students as it is a reflection of poor judgement that can affect personal lives, professional careers, and the lives of our current and future patients and their families. We encourage you to review the Illicit Drug and Alcohol Screening Policy which was implemented in 2018.

Health Insurance Requirement

All medical students will be required to carry annual health insurance; however, they will NOT be required to join the school-sponsored plan unless they want to do so. Individual policies will be accepted, including those available through the Affordable Care Act. For comparison purposes, the school-sponsored policy is currently priced at $6254 annually. Students will be required to show proof of coverage by presenting a copy of their insurance card to the Office of Student Affairs (in person, by email) upon matriculation.

Basic Life Support Certification Requirement

Each entering student is required to take the American Heart Association's HeartCode BLS for Healthcare Providers course prior to matriculation. Substitutions are not acceptable. This course can be taken as Instructor-Led Training or as a Blended Course where you complete the didactic portion of the course on-line and then you can go to a test center for the skills testing portion of the course. Go to https://cpr.heart.org/en/courses/basic-life-support-course-options . The skills testing portion of the course is available locally at the Cabell County EMS Training Center, 846 8th Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701 (304-526-8510).

We will need a photocopy of the certification card. Failure to obtain this certification may result in your not being permitted to matriculate.
