Application Process

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).  This service is available through your medical school or the ECFMG if you are a foreign medical graduate.  Foreign medical graduates must have a valid and current ECFMG certificate.  We only accept J1 Visas – no H1-B visas are accepted.  The Psychiatry Residency Program interviews for six positions each year.

PGY-1: First Year Trainees
The Marshall University Psychiatry Residency Training Programs accepts applications for PGY 1 applications through ERAS only.

We prefer applicants who:

  • have a demonstrated interest in psychiatry
  • have excellent clinical skills
  • have passed the USMLE or COMLEX tests on first attempt, if possible (taking into consideration the USMLE Step 2 CS and COMLEX-USA Level 2-PE Exam suspensions/delays)
  • have graduated within the last 3 years

Six positions are available each year: All applicants for either program must apply through ERAS. If offered a contract, candidate must complete and pass a mandatory drug screening and background check.

We review and assess each application on its individual merits.

PGY2-4 Applicants
Candidates may contact the program to inquire whether there are openings in advance training positions. Applications must submit a Universal Application, USMLE score reports, CV, personal statement, three recent letters of reference, medical school transcript, and dean’s letter. If the resident is currently in a program, there must be a letter from the current training director stating that he/she is aware the resident is seeking training in another program.
