Meal Allowance Surgery Residents receive annual meal allowances for on-call shifts at St. Mary’s and Cabell Huntington Hospital.  St. Mary’s currently distributes meal cards, but they are working on an electronic option.  At Cabell Huntington, $300 is loaded on residents’ badges each July and December for on-call shifts at that location.  Unused funds are zeroed out annually at the end of June. Meals provided every Wednesdays for didactics are offered in addition to these on-call meal allowances, and complimentary snacks and drinks are available in the simulation lab and call rooms.
Book & Educational Fund Allowance

Residents are provided with an annual book & educational fund allowance.  Effective July 1, 2023, the allowance increased to $1,000 for each of the training years. In instances where reimbursement will be requested for items besides textbooks, exam study aids, or Step or Board registration fees, advance approval from the Program Director via the Program Administrator must be obtained.  This can include laptops, phones, Loupes, and similar type expenses.  Reimbursement is generally provided in two weeks, and unused funds do not carry over to the next academic year.

Conference Fund Allowance

Chief Residents may attend one conference during their PGY5 year with the approval of the Program Director.  The budgeted allowance for travel, accommodations, and meals is $1,500. The cost of conference registration is covered by the program.

Research & Scholarly Activity Fund Allowance

With the Program Director’s approval, residents may attend one meeting per year to present research. The Program will reimburse the resident up to $1,500. Before the resident can go and present another abstract, he or she must submit the previously presented abstract for publication.

Poster Presentations:  The Department will pay for travel and lodging (up to $1,500) for the day before the poster presentation, and the resident will return the day after presenting.

Oral Presentations:  Reimbursement mirrors Poster presentations with one additional overnight stay.

Additional Research Funding

Effective July 1, 2023, with the Program Director’s approval, residents may be reimbursed up to $500 annually toward other types of research and scholarly activity.  This funding may be used toward costs for abstracts, publication fees to journals, registration costs for online research presentations/medical education events, or surgical or medical associations/society fees.  This is in addition to the funds provided for Oral or Poster Presentations.

Membership Dues Allowance

PGY2-5s’ membership dues for the American College of Surgeons’ Candidate Group will be paid by the Department annually.  The ACS waives interns’ membership fees.

Golden Needle Award

In October, 2023, the Golden Needle Award for resident recognition was implemented.  Using a tally-sheet at each training site, the Chief Residents track monthly procedure numbers, and the resident with the highest number of procedures at each site will receive the “Golden Needle Award.”  The Award includes a $50 credit to their Book & Educational Fund Allowance or their Research & Scholarly Activity Fund Allowance.  Unlike the annual Allowance funds, the Golden Needle Award credit does not expire on June 30th.
