Dr. Joseph Simmons named January Resident of the Month

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Joseph Simmons, M.D., has been named January Resident of the Month at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, announced Paulette S. Wehner, M.D., vice dean of graduate medical education.

Simmons is finishing his third and final year of the internal medicine residency program at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine where he obtained his M.D. The Shinnston, West Virginia, native was nominated by members of the internal medicine faculty.

“Dr. Simmons epitomizes resident excellence,” stated Eva Patton Tackett, M.D., associate professor and director of the internal medicine residency program. “Not only is he strong academically and clinically, but he is a terrific teacher with an incredible work ethic and strong devotion to his patients and community. His knowledge is evident by his outstanding performance as a three-year member of our medical jeopardy team.”

“Simmons’s nomination was a pleasure to read, and we are always thrilled when a local physician-in-training excels,” Wehner said. “He deserves to be recognized.”

As part of his Resident of the Month recognition, Simmons received a plaque and designated parking spot.

After completing his training in June 2023, Simmons and his wife, Kelly, will move to Morgantown where he will enter a gastroenterology fellowship program at West Virginia University.
