The program offers participation and observation of general dentistry within the dental clinic of Marshall Dentistry & Oral Surgery and is intended for international graduate dentists who wish to increase their knowledge through didactics and observation of patient care. Preceptors engage in didactic courses, observations and presentations in General Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Endodontics and Prosthodontics. This international preceptorship in general dentistry consists of two consecutive weeks, the second and third weeks (Monday through Friday) of a given month.

Preceptors will also be expected to present two didactic assignments:

  • Grand Rounds (subject material to be assigned or of the preceptor's pre-approved topic)

Grand Rounds will be held on the Friday afternoon of the 2nd week of preceptorship.

The program can accept up to two participants per session. Appropriate professional attire and grooming is required. Jeans are not permitted in the clinic.

Main Clinic

Observation of General Dentistry procedures with Dr Myers, Dr El Hassan, Dr Singh, General Practice Residents and Hygienists ranging from oral hygiene; initial examinations, periodic preventive (recall) examinations; treatment planning; restorative care; crown and bridge; implant restorative; removable full and partial prosthodontics; and selected oral surgery. Procedures and observations may vary due to scheduling during the selected preceptorship program time frame.

Oral Surgery Clinic

The Oral Surgery Clinic provides an opportunity to observe a range of oral surgical procedures with Dr. Khanna, board certified Oral & Maxillo-Facial Oral Surgeon and leading member of the faculty. All of these observations take place in the main clinic setting, rather than in a hospital environment. Participants will have the chance to observe various types of dental extractions, including routine, complex, and impacted teeth. In addition to extractions, the clinic experience includes observation of implant placement procedures, alveolar grafting techniques, and endodontic surgeries. The clinic also offers exposure to both hard and soft tissue biopsies.

Observations are scheduled according to the type of anesthesia being used for the cases. IV sedation cases are typically scheduled in the mornings, while procedures by local anesthesia are scheduled in the afternoons. Procedures and observations may vary due to scheduling during the selected preceptorship program time frame.

Periodontal Clinic

The periodontal component of the program consists of morning lectures and clinical observations, all led by Dr. Craft, a Board-certified Periodontist and member of the faculty. Selected morning lectures are delivered by Dr. Craft, offering insights into periodontal concepts and procedures. Following the lecture sessions, participants attend clinic hours where they observe a range of periodontal surgical procedures by faculty members and dental residents. The combination of didactic learning and hands-on observation provides participants with a comprehensive view of periodontal practice and surgical techniques. Please note that the specific lectures and procedures available for observation may vary depending on the schedules during the selected preceptorship program time frame.

Endodontic Clinic

The Endodontic component of the program consists of morning lecture by Dr Hugh, board certified Endodontist and instruction – supervision of the general practice residents offering insights into current endodontic concepts and procedures. Following a lecture session, participants attend clinic hours where they may observe a range of endodontic procedures led by Dr Hugh or faculty members and dental residents. The combination of didactic learning and hands-on observation provides participants with a comprehensive view of current endodontic practice. Please note that the specific lectures and procedures available for observation may vary depending on the schedules during the selected preceptorship program time frame.

Dental Operating Suite at Cabell Huntington Hospital

Observation of hospital-based general dentistry in the dental surgical suite located in Cabell-Huntington Hospital is with Dr Roy, member of the faculty. Procedures may include but not limited to: Extractions, Restorative. Generally, patients are limited to children, young adults and/or adults with medically compromised or behavioral complexities requiring dental care provision in a controlled environment under General Anesthesia. Please note that Procedures available for observation vary due to scheduling during the selected preceptorship program time frame and credentialing by Cabell-Huntington Hospital.

Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds offer participants and general practice residents the opportunity to deliver a presentation on a dentally related topic to both residents and faculty members. The topics may be selected by the participant or general practice residents and receive approval from the faculty or selected by the faculty prior to the presentation. Typically, presentations are conducted using Microsoft PowerPoint and are expected to last between 10 and 20 minutes. This format allows participants to share their knowledge and insights, fostering academic discussion within the clinic setting. Please note that Grand Rounds presentations may vary depending on the schedules during the selected preceptorship program time frame.
