Experience college life, make new friends and explore exciting career opportunities in health care at the Health Care Pathway Initiative (HCPI) — a summer residential camp for high school students from West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. If you’re interested in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM), this program is your chance to immerse yourself into the world of health care. From nursing and pharmacy to research, health informatics and biomedical engineering, the possibilities are endless.

Join us this summer for a hands-on experience that will help shape your future in health care!

Program Objectives

  • Learn from a variety of healthcare and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals
  • Explore viable career options
  • Learn about the educational requirements, skills, typical job duties and personal qualities of specific health professionals
  • Participate in interactive hands-on activities that highlight the skills, equipment, technology and resources used by STEM professionals
  • Increase awareness and understanding of the care setting and structure of STEM workplaces
  • Enjoy four weeks of interactive fun on the Marshall University campus
  • Participate in field trips, career day and speakers from business, industry, civil, Army and Department of Defense STEM careers
  • Receive certificate of participation
  • Participate in College PREP Workshop to include SAT/ACT test preparation
  • Receive personalized attention from Marshall University faculty, staff and graduate students

To be considered for the program, students entering the 8-12 grade must submit the following:

  • Application form
  • Short answer form
  • Copy of unofficial transcript or grade card
  • Recommendation letter from a teacher or guidance counselor

All students will be notified in May whether they have been or have not been accepted to participate in the program.

HCPI students will stay in a secure residence hall on the Marshall University campus and will be accompanied by program staff at all times. Students are required to abide by all university housing rules.

Activities will be held on Marshall University’s Huntington campus, including the schools of medicine and pharmacy. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the camp. Transportation will be provided to all Marshall University campus sites during the camp.

Upon acceptance into the Health Care Pathway Initiative, students will receive registration forms that are required to be completed before the student is officially registered for the program.
