Why I love Marshall: Marshall orthopaedics provides an unparalleled environment for forming close knit relationships with co-residents and staff members that are essential to having a great experience during residency. The authentic support and mentorship of faculty members is something that sets Marshall apart and will prepare me for success in my career as an orthopaedic surgeon. Furthermore, Huntington, WV is a great area to get outside and explore the beautiful scenery this state has to offer as well as providing an array of options for dining, entertainment, and more.

Why I love Marshall: From day one, I was immersed in learning how to operate and manage consults with confidence and precision. Our attending physicians are deeply committed to our education and maturation as orthopedic surgeons. Most importantly, our program feels like a family – we always spend time together outside the hospital, whether playing golf, going out on the lake, or sharing a meal!

Marshall Orthopaeadics embodies a philosophy of “as iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man”. From department chair to the interns, everyone is invested in each other. Why I love Marshall: I love Marshall Orthopaedics due to how supportive and focused the whole department is on making us great orthopaedic surgeons and making sure we have successful careers. The collaborative and supportive environment built here and the attendings’ commitment to teaching really makes this the perfect place to become an orthopaedic surgeon. In addition, the diversity and number of orthopaedic cases we are able to not just be a part of but lead allows us to be ready for anything we may see throughout our careers.

Why Marshall: Everyone—attendings, PAs, nurses, scrub techs, the list goes on—is so kind and hardworking. The residents are patient, knowledgeable, and talented. And the patients are so sweet and grateful that it makes every day, no matter how stressful or long, worth it.

Why Marshall: This program strikes a meaningful balance. Residents are not only dedicated to each other’s clinical and academic growth but also genuinely invested in each other’s lives. I arrived with a family and was welcomed with open arms—including events that made it easy to include my kids. Some of the residents even helped me move in. I’m grateful for how this program takes pride in each resident and supports our unique paths. As our program director often reminds us, the goal is to train not just top-tier surgeons, but truly excellent people.

Why I love Marshall: Marshall is great for getting you heavily involved from day one, including playing an active role in the OR. No other program I interviewed with had interns scrubbing cases and getting reps so early. Beyond the operative experience, Marshall offers a unique and incredibly tight resident culture. They are dedicated to becoming the best surgeons in the country and continuously push each other to achieve greatness. They also enjoy spending time together as a group outside of work at bars, restaurants, golf courses, and each other’s houses. My wife and I received a warm welcome and were quickly integrated into the Marshall Family. I cannot express how thankful I am to be a member of this family!

Why I love Marshall: I noticed the close-knit culture of Marshall’s Orthopaedic Surgery residency program from the very beginning of my interview day. Along with the early operative experience and hard-working mentality straight out of We Are Marshall, I was struck by how much the residents genuinely enjoyed spending time together outside of the hospital. Whether it’s grabbing dinner, watching a game, or just relaxing together, there’s a sense of camaraderie that makes Marshall feel like more than just a training program. At the same time, the culture never loses sight of excellence. Residents consistently match into outstanding fellowships and go on to become leaders in orthopaedics, reflecting the program’s high standard of training and mentorship. When I was searching for a residency, I wanted a place that would challenge me to become the best surgeon I can be and feel like a place to call home. I cannot imagine a better place than Marshall to find both.

Why I love Marshall: Marshall immediately stood out to me on interview day. It felt like a program built around everything I was looking for in an orthopaedic surgery residency. It had rigorous surgical training that will prepare me to become an outstanding surgeon, a close-knit resident culture that makes the challenges of residency rewarding, and a learning environment where resident education is the highest priority. From the very beginning, I was struck by the level of support Marshall provides its residents. The faculty and program leadership are genuinely invested in helping each resident reach their full potential. Marshall fosters a culture that is adaptable, supportive, and continually challenges its residents to grow both technically and professionally. People often talk about finding a “hidden gem” during the interview trail, but I truly believe Marshall is exactly that. There is no other program where I would rather spend the next five years developing into the orthopaedic surgeon I aspire to become.

Why I love Marshall: What I love most about Marshall is the people. From my interview day, it was clear that everyone, from the residents to the faculty, is invested in helping each other become the best surgeons they can be. After my wife and I moved to Huntington, we experienced that same sense of community firsthand. We were welcomed with open arms, and it already feels like home. I also love our mentorship model, which gives interns the opportunity to work one-on-one with attendings and gain meaningful operative experience from the very beginning of residency. The combination of a close-knit community, strong mentorship, and early operative experience is what makes Marshall such a special place to train.
