Assistant Professor
Dr. Dana Lycans is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery of the hip and knee. Other specialties include knee ligament reconstruction and meniscus tears; hip labral repair and reconstruction; tendon repair; cartilage restoration; rotator cuff repair and shoulder instability; and elbow ulnar collateral ligament repair (Tommy John Surgery).
A proud native of Lavalette, West Virginia, Dr. Lycans serves his hometown community as an assistant professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the school of medicine and as chief of orthopedic surgery at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He also is an active team physician for Marshall University Athletics as well as several regional high schools.
Dr. Lycans completed his undergraduate, medical school and residency training at Marshall University, followed by a prestigious sports medicine fellowship at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. During his fellowship he worked alongside world-renowned surgeons and provided care for athletes at all levels—including collegiate programs and professional organizations such as WWE and USA Cheer.
Dr. Lycans is deeply committed to providing exceptional orthopedic care to the region he calls home and is proud to blend academic excellence, surgical expertise and compassionate care in every patient interaction. He is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and orthopedic textbooks, with a strong focus on hip preservation, ACL reconstruction and biologic treatments in sports medicine. He is a member of multiple national orthopedic societies and has received numerous awards for excellence in education and research.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Lycans enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He’s an avid outdoorsman who finds joy in hunting, fishing and exploring the natural beauty of West Virginia. He is also a licensed pilot, often taking to the skies when time allows.
