Message from the Program Director

On behalf of the faculty, residents, and staff, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Anesthesiology Residency Program at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. We are delighted that you are considering joining our program as you embark on this exciting next chapter in your medical career.

At Marshall, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment where residents are encouraged to grow both personally and professionally. Our program offers a comprehensive curriculum, hands-on clinical experience, and mentorship from a dedicated team of anesthesiologists who are passionate about teaching and advancing the specialty.

As a resident here, you will have the opportunity to care for a diverse patient population, develop expertise in a wide range of anesthetic techniques, and participate in innovative research and quality improvement initiatives. Most importantly, you will become part of a close-knit community that values teamwork, compassion, and excellence in patient care.

Salary & Benefits

Paid Vacation 3 weeks of vacation (for CA-1 & CA-2 (PGY 2 & 3)) or 4 weeks of vacation (for CA-3 (PGY4)) are taken in one- or two-week intervals throughout each year of residency training.
Insurance
  • Malpractice: Provided to the resident at no cost from the State of West Virginia's Comprehensive Liability Insurance Policy.
  • Health: Variety of plans/costs starting at $110/month and up depending upon coverage and tobacco use status.
  • Flexible Benefits: Dental and Vision care are availability.
  • Group Term Life:  No cost to the resident and begins the first day of the month coinciding with or following date of hire.  The life benefit is equal to 1.25 times the annual salary with a minimum $60,000 coverage. Additional life insurance can also be purchased for the resident/fellow and their dependents.
  • Social Security: Employee and Employer pay social security taxes. International medical graduates who provide a copy of their J-1 Visa to Payroll will be exempt from social security taxes.
  • Workers' Compensation: Coverage is provided.
  • Long Term Disability Insurance: Provided to resident at no charge
  • Short Term Disability Insurance:  If selected, the premiums and weekly benefit are based on age and 60% of annual salary up to $1,000 maximum weekly benefit.
Sick Leave Residents accrue 15 days of sick leave annually.
Parking Free
Meal Allowance

Anesthesiology Residents receive annual meal allowances for on-call shifts at St. Mary’s and Cabell Huntington Hospital.  St. Mary’s currently distributes meal cards, but they are working on an electronic option.  At Cabell Huntington, $300 is loaded on residents’ badges each July and December for on-call shifts at that location.  Unused funds are zeroed out annually at the end of June. Meals provided every Wednesday for didactics and are offered in addition to these on-call meal allowances.

Book Fund

$1,000 annually. In instances where reimbursement will be requested for items besides textbooks, exam study aids, or Step or Board registration fees, advance approval from the Program Director via the Program Coordinator must be obtained. Unused funds do not carry over to the next academic year.

Application Information

Our Institution participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP Match); therefore, all applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). In addition to reviewing all aspects of applicants’ MyERAS required application, our Program will also be reviewing supplemental data in a holistic approach to recruitment this cycle.

As part of this holistic review, applicants will be considered based on the following Program review criteria:

  • Performance in medical school as shown on their official transcript.
  • Performance on the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK examinations.
  • Supplemental data including AOA, community outreach, and experiences.
  • Graduation from medical school within the past two years.
  • Institutional requirements include ECFMG certification for IMG’s who are offered a contract, and J1 visas are accepted; H1-B visas are not sponsored by our institution.

Note: Matched candidates must complete and pass a mandatory drug screening and background check​

  • Program Length: 4 years
  • Positions: Up to four per year
  • First cohort start date: July 1, 2026

The Marshall University anesthesiology residency earned initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) on Sept. 10, 2025, and is prepared to welcome its first cohort on July 1, 2026.
