Standing Out in Our Field raises more than $100,000 for medical student scholarships

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine’s Standing Out in Our Field 7 raised more than $100,000 for its student scholarship endowment.  The annual event was held Saturday, August 27, 2022, at the Barboursville Soccer Complex.

“After a two-year pandemic hiatus, it was wonderful to see so many come out to enjoy the event and support the education of our current and future medical students,” said Linda S. Holmes, director of development and alumni affairs at the School of Medicine. “Since our inaugural SOIOF event in 2014, we’ve invested nearly $700,000 into a scholarship endowment to provide scholarships.”

More than 500 guests enjoyed a “Night in Havana”- themed fundraising event and outdoor dining experience featuring music by Big Planet Soul, dancing and a gourmet Cuban menu by Cabell Huntington Hospital’s Executive Chef Don Sallada. Sixty medical students and future medical students (BS/MD program) served as volunteer servers.

“It was an honor to volunteer and be part of this fun event with my classmates and future medical students while contributing to decrease student debt,” said Bethany Andrew, president of the Class of 2025, a second-year medical student from Bridgeport, West Virginia.

The event’s title sponsor is Mountain Health Network, the school’s major teaching hospital partner. Additional sponsors are:  Valley Health Systems, Inc., Champion Industries, E.P. Leach & Sons Inc., Holzer Health System, Marshall University Research Corporation, OVP Health, Radiology, Inc., Retina Consultants, Highland Hospital, King’s Daughters Medical Center, MagMutual Insurance Company, Marshall Health, Dr. Maurice & Mrs. Diane Mufson, NorthStar Anesthesia, Ohio Valley Bank, Pleasant Valley Hospital, Appalachian Regional Healthcare, Edward Tucker Architects, Inc., Wilmink Smith Cline Wealth Advisors, River Park Hospital, King Spirits, Walmart Supercenter #2244 and WoodmenLife.
