- Standing Out in Our Field raises more than $100,000 for medical student scholarships
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine’s Standing Out in Our Field (SOIOF) 8 raised more than $100,000 for its student scholarship endowment. The annual event was held Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Barboursville Soccer Complex.
“It’s always wonderful to see the community come out to support our future physicians,” said Linda S. Holmes, director of development and alumni affairs at the School of Medicine. “Since our inaugural SOIOF event in 2014, we’ve invested nearly $900,000 into an endowment fund that provides medical student scholarships.”
More than 500 guests enjoyed the “Margaritaville”-themed fundraising event and outdoor dining experience featuring music by Santa Cruz, dancing and a gourmet Caribbean menu by Cabell Huntington Hospital’s Executive Chef Don Sallada. The event’s title sponsor was Mountain Health Network, the school’s major teaching hospital partner. Seventy medical students and future medical students from the B.S./M.D. and M.D. Early Assurance programs were volunteer servers.
“It was a privilege to volunteer at this event,” said Jentre Hyde, a fourth-year medical student from Parkersburg, West Virginia. “Scholarships are vital to decreasing student debt.”
