Robert B. Walker, M.D., joins Marshall Health to provide geriatric care

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – Longtime family medicine physician Robert B. Walker, M.D., has rejoined Marshall Health to provide primary care to senior citizens in the region. 

Walker rejoins the faculty in the department of family and community health at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine after nearly a decade-long hiatus. Since 2008, Walker has served as vice chancellor for health sciences at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

Walker returns to his family medicine roots at Marshall and the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. From 1986 to 2008, he served as professor and chairman of the department of family and community health at Marshall, as well as associate dean for clinical affairs, director of clinical affairs for the Robert C. Byrd Center for Rural Health and executive vice dean. Walker is also a trustee of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and the Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia.

“Caring for elderly patients is my passion,” Walker said. “I’m thrilled to be back with the Marshall family.” 

Over the years, Walker has also served as medical director/advisor for a number of primary care practices in our region. He earned his medical degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, and completed his residency at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He is board certified in geriatrics, family medicine and preventive medicine.

Walker is joined by Michael L. Grome, PA-C, a physician assistant who specializes in geriatrics. Grome has more than 30 years of experience in geriatric patient care. He has a bachelor’s degree in chemical science from Xavier University in Cincinnati and earned his physician assistant degree from Kettering College in Kettering, Ohio. 

In addition to caring for aging adults, Grome is passionate about access to care in rural areas. He is licensed by the West Virginia Board of Medicine and is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
