Marshall School of Medicine names Jennifer Dotson, D.O., November Fellow of the Month

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Jennifer Dotson, D.O., has been named Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine’s Fellow of the Month for November, announced Paulette S. Wehner, M.D., vice dean for graduate medical education at the school.

Dotson is completing her third and final year of the hematology/oncology fellowship at Marshall. Several staff members and patients nominated her for the award for providing outstanding, compassionate clinical care.

“One of the most challenging tasks we have as medical educators is to teach our medical residents and fellows how to share and connect with our patients’ emotions,” Wehner said. “Dr. Dotson, on the other hand, is not only an excellent physician, but one who has compassion and empathy as innate character traits.”

The Ransom, Kentucky, native completed her internal medicine residency at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and earned her medical degree from the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville. While obtaining a biology degree at the University of Pikeville, her mother’s battle with colon cancer motivated her to pursue medicine as a career.

“This award truly reflects Dr. Dotson’s exceptional ability to relate to her patients in their time of difficulty in dealing with their cancer diagnosis,” said Maria Tria Tirona, M.D., FACP, hematology/ oncology fellowship program director. “I have personally witnessed her spontaneous feeling of warmth and kindness towards her patients and that her patients frequently commend her for her compassionate clinical care. I am also very pleased that she will join our faculty when she completes her training.”

Dotson will join the hematology/oncology clinical faculty at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center upon completion of her training in July 2019. The hematology/oncology fellowship program trains physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and all types of cancers.

As part of her recognition as the November Fellow of the Month, Dotson received a plaque and designated parking spot.
