Marshall School of Medicine hosts 18th Annual Golf Classic
Proceeds benefit graduation activities, scholarship fund

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine hosted its 18th Annual Golf Classic, presented by BrickStreet Insurance and Natural Resource Partners, Tuesday, May 3, at Sugarwood Golf Club in Lavalette.

More than 100 players gathered that morning for the golf scramble. This year’s winning foursome was Joe Browning, Adrian Garmestani (School of Medicine, Class of 2001), Ben McGinnis and Chris Tolliver. The longest drives went to Bruce Dean on #1 and Boston Miller (Class of 2016) on #11, while Jesse Fredeen (Class of 2016) was closest to the pin (#12 second shot) and Dennis Cole (Class of 2016) had the longest putt on #18. Ryan Keaton won the putting contest. Following the scramble, players gathered for an awards presentation and lunch provided by HoneyBaked Ham.

The event was generously co-sponsored by BrickStreet Insurance and Natural Resource Partners LP (co-title sponsors); Cabell Huntington Hospital, Dinsmore & Shohl LLP, The Health Plan, Holzer Health System, Marshall University Athletics, Maxor National Pharmacy Services, McKesson, Ohio Valley Physicians–Dr. Bob Hess (Class of 1984), Dr. Julia Pasquale (Class of 2003), Retina Consultants PLLC, River Park Hospital, and Kevin Wall, Tammy Wall, Brittany Wall (Class of 2016) & Jim Wells (green sponsors); Dr. David A. and Mrs. Sharon N. Denning, Marshall University Research Corporation and James H. Young for Judge (white sponsors); and Farrell White & Legg PLLC, HealthNet Aeromedical Services, Inc., HQ Publishing, Lee Graphics, Inc., Northwestern Mutual and Thornburg Insurance Agency (putting sponsors). Additional thanks go to Blenko Glass Company, Eagle Distributing and Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia.

Proceeds from the golf classic went to support graduation week activities and helped the Class of 2016 achieve its goal of establishing an endowed scholarship before graduation.

“We are honored to be among the handful of graduating classes that have graduated with their class scholarships fully endowed,” said Matthew Snyder, fourth-year medical student and president of the Class of 2016. “The scholarships we received were so beneficial in helping reduce our student debt, so it is a priority for our class to give back.”

In addition to the golf tournament, the class conducted various fundraisers throughout their four years in medical school to help raise the $15,000 needed to endow a scholarship.
