Marshall School of Medicine approved for new fellowship program

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to begin a hematology-oncology fellowship program. 

The new three-year hematology-oncology fellowship will replace the current two-year medical oncology fellowship which began in 2012.

“I’m very excited and proud of our team for their outstanding work in this successful effort to bring a new ACGME fellowship to Marshall,” said Joseph I. Shapiro, M.D., dean of the school of medicine. “We are continuing to expand our education and training opportunities which is a vital and necessary step in our growth as an academic medical center.“ 

Paulette S. Wehner, M.D., vice dean for graduate medical education, said the new program will be the first one in the Tri-State and only the second in West Virginia.

“This new fellowship expands offerings to allow our trainees to be able to evaluate, diagnose, treat and manage patients with cancer (leukemia, lymphoma and/or tumors) as well as treat diseases of the blood cells and bleeding disorders,” Wehner said.

Maria TriaTirona, M.D., current fellowship director for medical oncology, will continue as program director for the new fellowship.  

“Having accreditation and approval for a three-year hematology-oncology fellowship program is another important milestone for the oncology program at our school of medicine and the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center,” Tirona said. “This serves as a testament to the ongoing commitment of both institutions in educating and training future competent and compassionate hematologists and medical oncologists in the fight against cancer and hematological diseases, not just in the Tri-State region but in the nation as well.”

Marshall has eight ACGME-accredited residency programs and seven accredited fellowship programs. The ACGME is a private, nonprofit council that evaluates and accredits residency and fellowship programs in the United States.
