Gozals establish scholarship to support first-generation medical students at Marshall University

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - To assist first-generation physicians like himself, David Gozal, M.D., M.B.A., Ph.D. (Hon.), vice president for health affairs and dean of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, and his wife, Elaine Gozal, MSc, have established a new scholarship.

The Country Roads First Steps Scholarship will provide $1,000 annually to an entering first-year medical student from West Virginia who will be the first member of their family to attend medical school. The award will be renewable for three additional years as long as the recipient maintains normal academic progress.

The scholarship’s name reflects both its West Virginia roots and the first steps its recipients are taking toward a career in medicine.

"Being a first-generation physician in my family primed Elaine and I to pay it forward," David Gozal said. "There is nothing more gratifying than helping others achieve their dreams, particularly when such dreams involve acquiring the tools to reduce human suffering from disease."

The Gozals are taking their first steps on the dance floor in support of their latest scholarship during Marshall University’s “Dancing with the Herd” on Nov. 20. The student-led event is a night of choreographed performances by prominent Marshall couples or groups to raise money for student-centered funds.

"David and I know how much it means to have someone believe in you and your dreams," Elaine Gozal said. "The Country Roads First Steps Scholarship is our way of sharing that encouragement with the next generation of physicians. Nothing would make us happier than seeing these students succeed and one day pay that kindness forward. And being able to share some laughter, dancing, and wonderful memories along the way makes it all the more special."

The Gozals hope their Dancing with the Herd campaign will raise at least $26,000, enough to fully endow the scholarship—and perhaps go even further.
