- Alumni Spotlight: Anthony Johnson, MD
Anthony Johnson, MD, also known as “Dr. J,” is a general pediatrician at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, South Carolina, where he has practiced as an attending physician since 2019. He participates on internal committees including credentialing and community health outreach and serves as a member of the Health Services Advisory Committee of the GLEAMNS Head Start program.
Anthony studied biomedical engineering and graduated with honors in 2009 from the University of Tennessee. He then obtained his M.D. from the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and completed his residency at Marshall Health.
During his time at Marshall, Anthony worked closely with the School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity & Inclusion. He served as chair of the Multicultural Advisory Council and Marshall University’s chapter of the Student National Medical Association. He was also founding team member and ambassador for the School of Medicine’s pathway programs, serving as a mentor for Project PREMED and a summer instructor for the Health Care Pathways Initiative. Dr. Johnson also served on the first Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians resident representative.
Dr. Johnson has future aspirations of going back to school to obtain a master’s degree in healthcare administration. He then plans to migrate into hospital administration and eventually become the chief medical officer of a healthcare organization.
Dr. Johnson enjoys traveling, and he places a premium on spending quality time with his family and friends.
