WHAT IS MENTORING ACADEMY: AIM.
Mentoring Academy: AIM is the professional hub for all faculty, students, residents and fellows engaged in mentorship at JCESOM. It’s designed to foster a vibrant community where mentorship is celebrated and actively pursued to enhance professional and personal growth.
MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of JCESOM’s Mentoring Academy AIM is to cultivate excellence in mentorship. We aim to enhance the mentoring experience by offering robust support and resources, nurturing, and promoting a thriving mentorship culture.
THE CORE PURPOSE OF THE JCESOM ACADEMY OF MENTORING:
- Cultivate a Mentoring Culture at JCESOM: We are dedicated to embedding a strong culture of mentorship across our community, making it a fundamental part of our identity.
- Recognize Excellence in Mentoring: Through ongoing recognition programs, we celebrate outstanding mentorship and inspire all members to strive for excellence.
- Enhance Visibility and Interest in Mentoring: We actively promote mentoring, in creasing its visibility and importance within the academic community.
- Support Interdisciplinary Mentorship: Our platform provides a comprehensive support network for mentors and mentees, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and learning opportunities.
PROGRAM
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
- Develop Mentorship Skills: Provide training and resources to enhance the skills of both mentors and mentees, ensuring effective and impactful mentorship relationships.
- Foster Mentor-Mentee Connections: Facilitate networking opportunities and structured programs that strengthen bonds between mentors and mentees across different disciplines.
- Promote Research and Innovation in Mentorship: Encourage and support research initiatives that explore innovative mentoring techniques and their outcomes.
- Sustain a Supportive Environment: Establish a supportive environment that acknowledges the challenges and rewards of mentorship and offers guidance and assistance to navigate these dynamics effectively.
- Measure Impact and Outcomes: Regularly assess the effectiveness of mentorship practices and their impact on personal and professional development within the JCESOM community.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE:
Participants are matched with seasoned mentors specific to their chosen track, offering personalized guidance aligned with their career goals. The curriculum is enriched with workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities that cultivate a community of professionals and students with shared ambitions.
PROGRAM BENEFITS:
Mentees will gain critical insights into their chosen fields, access a robust network of professionals, and have opportunities to apply their skills in practical settings. The program’s flexible structure caters to individual growth, maximizing each participant’s learning outcomes and career development potential.
MEMBERSHIP
MEMBERSHIP IN THE ACADEMY:
Membership is structured to maximize the Academy’s contributions to JCESOM’s tripartite mission, offering distinct tracks for clinicians, educators, and researchers:
Clinician Track: This track enhances clinical skills, patient care, and knowledge of the latest medical advancements. It is ideal for those aiming for excellence in patient-centered roles and clinical leadership.
Educator Track: This track is designed for those interested in medical education. It covers curriculum development, teaching methodologies, and technology integration in education, making it perfect for aspiring medical educators.
Researcher Track: This track is tailored for individuals focused on biomedical research. It emphasizes research methodology, grant writing, publication strategies, and scientific innovation.
MEMBERSHIP CATEGORY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Protégé
- Enrolled as a medical student, graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, resident, or fellow.
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to personal and professional growth within the field of healthcare or academia.
- Lacks significant professional experience but shows potential for significant development and contribution to the field.
- Recommended by a faculty advisor, senior colleague, or supervisor.
- Actively seeks opportunities for learning and professional development.
Fellow
- Recently entered the field of Mentoring.
- Shows a consistent history of mentoring one or more Protégés.
- Exhibits a strong commitment to personal and professional growth
- Recommended by an Associate or Master Mentor
Assistant
- Minimum of three years of experience in the field of mentoring.
- Demonstrates a consistent track record of mentoring five or more Protégés or Fellows
- Shows evidence of initial achievements and contributions to mentorship
- Provides evidence of positive impact on mentees’ growth and development
Associate
- Minimum of five years of experience in the field of mentoring.
- Actively mentors Fellows or Assistant Mentors.
- Engages in ongoing training in mentoring techniques.
- Nominated by a Master Mentor
Master Mentor
- Minimum of ten years of experience in the field of mentoring.
- Extensive experience mentoring across multiple levels (Protégé to Associate Mentor).
- Demonstrates leadership in mentoring initiatives at the organizational and/or wider community level.
- Engages in scholarly activities related to mentoring, such as publishing articles or leading seminars.
- Recognized by peers for exceptional contributions to mentorship and professional development.
CURRICULUM
CURRICULUM:
The AIM Mentoring Academy curriculum is crafted to be a dynamic and evolving educational experience, adaptable to the latest trends and advancements in the medical field. This ensures that the AIM program remains at the forefront of training future generations of health professionals and scientists.
Curriculum Details:
- Participants in the Academy are required to complete the following core online modules for mentors and mentees:
- Aligning Expectations: This module focuses on clearly defining and communicating the goals, responsibilities, and expectations of both the mentor and mentee at the start of the relationship. It ensures both parties are aligned regarding objectives, time commitments, and mutual responsibilities, leading to a more productive and satisfying mentorship experience.
- Fostering Independence: This module guides mentors in helping mentees become self-sufficient and confident in their abilities. It involves providing support and resources while encouraging mentees to take initiative, make decisions, and solve problems independently, ultimately preparing them to succeed on their own.
- Mentor-Mentee Relationship Parameters: This module outlines the guidelines and boundaries needed to maintain a healthy and productive mentoring relationship. It includes setting clear communication norms, defining the scope of the mentorship, respecting personal boundaries, and ensuring mutual respect and trust to create a supportive and effective mentorship environment.
- Cultivating Ethical Behavior: This module emphasizes the importance of upholding integrity, transparency, and professionalism in the mentor-mentee relationship. Mentors should model ethical behavior and discuss the importance of ethics in their field. It includes respecting confidentiality, avoiding conflicts of interest, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and ensuring that both mentor and mentee conduct themselves according to the highest ethical standards of their profession. This fosters a trustworthy and respectful mentoring dynamic.
Certificate of Completion for the Core Modules: Awarded upon successful program completion, demonstrating professional growth and accomplishment in the chosen track.
As part of our Mentoring Academy – Following 4 Mentoring modules (3-5 min each) are created in Genius – A Credly badge can be earned when you complete these modules.

ACADEMY POLICY FOR ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP:
Members must commit to active participation, contributing time and talents to service, leadership, and the advancement of mentoring within the JCESOM community. Requirements include:
- Active Participation: All members must attend greater than 60% of educational sessions.
- Annual Commitment: All members must attend the annual Fall Mentoring symposium
- Ongoing Engagement: Members at the levels of Associate and Master Mentor must engage in additional Academy activities at least once every two years.
CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE FOR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION
Participants in the Mentoring Academy will receive Certificates of Excellence in recognition of their active engagement in academy activities.
The levels of recognition are:
- Bronze: 1 year of participation
- Silver: 3 years of participation
- Gold: 5 years of participation
