Department of Anesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine delivers top-tier care while training future anesthesiologists with enhanced learning opportunities in perioperative medicine, critical care, airway management, pain control and operating room management.

With a national shortage of anesthesiologists, especially in rural areas like West Virginia, our role is pivotal in ensuring that communities, regardless of their location, receive safe and effective anesthetic care. As professionals dedicated to patient well-being, we are committed to equipping a new generation of practitioners with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide high quality anesthesia services where they are most needed. By fostering an environment that emphasizes hands-on experience, continual learning, and adaptability to different care settings, we prepare residents to meet the unique challenges faced in underserved areas. Additionally, we advocate for a practice rooted in compassion and cultural sensitivity, recognizing the diverse needs and limited resources that rural populations often experience.

About Us

The Department of Anesthesiology at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine was established in 2022 to facilitate additional learning opportunities for student education, research and advanced training.

In the coming years, we are focused on:

  • Enriching the educational experience for medical students interested in this specialty so that they may become successful in their pursuit of a career in anesthesiology
  • Complementing the training experience in Marshall's residency and fellowship programs.
  • Building a core faculty to support the department’s clinical, educational and research missions and initiate steps to ultimately establish an accredited anesthesiology residency at Marshall.
  • Working alongside anesthesiologists from NorthStar Anesthesia, a national anesthesiology group that supports our primary teaching hospitals as part of Marshall Health Network and the Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center.
  • Establishing a foundation of research in pain management, perioperative medicine and patient safety in order to improve outcomes for all patients while advancing the field of anesthesiology.
