School of Medicine honors faculty at annual award ceremony

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine recognized several faculty for their achievements during its annual year-end award ceremony this week.

“Our annual faculty awards are more than just recognition of individual excellence. They are a celebration of the collective effort and impact our faculty have in shaping the future of healthcare," said Darshana Shah, Ph.D., associate dean for faculty advancement. “This event is a valuable opportunity to acknowledge our faculty members' hard work and dedication. It serves as an inspiration to students and fellow educators alike, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement in healthcare and education.”

Dean David Gozal, M.D., M.B.A, Ph.D. (Hon) presented his Dean’s Awards of Excellence in the following categories:

Clinical Care – Semeret Munie, M.D., associate professor of surgery, has provided exemplary patient care and served the needs of our community for more than four years.

Research – Mary-Louise Risher, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical sciences, is a well-published and collaborative alcohol use disorder researcher who has earned competitive funding from multiple federal agencies.

Education – Kathleen O’Hanlon, M.D., professor of family and community health, effortlessly teaches her residents and students while providing excellent clinical care to patients.

The following additional awards were also presented:

  • Outstanding Medical Educator of the Year – Hisham A. Keblawi, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology
  • Outstanding Clinical Teacher – Semeret Munie, M.D., associate professor of surgery
  • Excellence in Assessment – Beverly Delidow, Ph.D. associate professor of biomedical sciences
  • Excellence in Curricular Innovation – Larry Grover, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical sciences
  • Excellence in Mentoring – David Rupp, M.D., associate professor of family and community health
  • Excellence in Leadership – Adrienne M. Mays-Kingston, M.D., associate professor of family and community health
  • Excellence in Service – Kristina Bryant-Melvin, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine and Andrea Lauffer, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics and internal medicine
  • Excellence in Medical Education Department of the Year – Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Excellence in Scholarly Activity Departments of the Year – Biomedical Sciences and Internal Medicine
  • Rural Preceptor of the Year – Jodi Cisco-Goff, M.D., associate professor of surgery
  • Going Above and Beyond Award – Rebecca (Blake) Chaney, clerkship department, obstetrics and gynecology
  • Distinguished Woman in Medicine & Science – Kathleen O’Hanlon, M.D., professor of family and community health
  • Woman in Medicine & Science Advancement Award – Tammy Bannister, M.D., professor of family and community health
  • Woman in Medicine & Science Trailblazer Award – Beth L. Hammers, M.B.A., Chief Executive Officer of Marshall Health
