Morning Session

Medical Emergencies for Dental Providers
Presenter: Raj K. Khanna, DMD, MD
Participants in this course will be introduced to information essential to diagnose and respond to medical emergencies in the oral health care setting. Special emphasis is placed on factors to be considered in risk-assessment, recognizing medical emergencies that are immediately life-threatening and must be acted upon swiftly; and those problems that, while not immediately life-threatening, require timely stabilization. Discuss essential elements of being prepared for a medical emergency in the oral health care setting. Attendees will gain the ability to recognize signs and symptoms and formulate a diagnosis for a medical emergency and initiate timely action to stabilize the patient before emergency medical services arrive.

Infection Control & OSHA in the Dental Office
Presenter: Bobbi Jo Muto, RDH, BS, MPH
This session will update and inform dental professional on the latest changes and updates for establishing a safety culture in the dental office. Attendees will review basic OSHA and Infection Control standards and guidelines, understand the importance of standard precautions, gain an understanding of how to assure basic standards in your patient treatment setting and obtain tools and knowledge to create a culture of safety in your dental practice.

Afternoon Session
Drug Diversion for the Dental Professional
Presenter: Raj K. Khanna, DMD, MD
This session will allow attendees to; be able to describe the opioid crisis, describe the epidemiology of pain and misuse of opioids, describe the indication for opioids in pain treatment including general characteristic, toxicities and drug interaction, identify drug seeking tactics and behaviors. Learn Best Practices for working with patients suspected of drug seeking behavior and diversion, become knowledgeable about the current controlled substance laws and WV Controlled Substance Monitoring Program.

Tobacco Cessation
Presenters: Janna Thornsbury, BS, RDH, NCTTP & Wendy Mosteller, RBA, RDH, CTTS
This session will be an overview of the latest in tobacco trends, statics. The audience will receive updates around tobacco trends such as vaping and hookah use, best cessation methods and addressing use among the populations we serve.
