Curriculum

Our endocrinology Fellowship Program is divided into three main rotations: Inpatient Rotation, Outpatient Rotation, and Research Rotation. Each rotation lasts 1 month.

Inpatient Rotation:
Fellows are assigned to the inpatient consult service 6 months per year during their training, one month at a time. The General Endocrinology Consult Service is led by an attending endocrinologist. Two fellows (a first year and a second year) are assigned to the service. Other members of the team are Internal Medicine or Family Medicine Residents, as well as medical students. We see patients at two locations: St. Mary’s Medical Center and Cabell Huntington Hospital. Fellows are exposed to a diverse patient population with a wide range of complex endocrine conditions. During their Inpatient month, fellows keep their continuity clinic (one half day per week) and are expected in our Tuesday Educational Activities. Fellows are usually on call one weekend per month.

Outpatient Rotation:

  • Continuity Clinic: Each fellow has their own continuity clinic. This allows them to follow their own patients during their training. They are assigned a Clinic preceptor.
  • Transgender Care Clinic: Two Thursdays a month, fellows are assigned to work in our Transgender Clinic. The objective of this clinical rotation is to become proficient on following the Standards of Care of Transgender and Gender Diverse patients.
  • Obesity Clinic: Two Thursdays a month, our fellows rotate with the multidisciplinary team in our weight loss clinic.
  • General Endocrinology Clinic: Fellows have the opportunity to work with different endocrinologists during their outpatient rotation and learn from different treatment styles and strategies.
  • Diabetes Education and Dietitian: Fellows are assigned to assist an entire diabetes education session, as well as Insulin Pump initiation session with our pump specialists.
  • High Risk Pregnancy: Our High Risk Obstetrics and Gynecology team closely follows patients with various conditions such as Type one diabetes on insulin pumps, and gestational diabetes.
  • Lipid Clinic: Our fellows rotate with one of our cardiology to learn how to treat complex lipid disorders.
  • Pediatric Endocrinology: Second year Fellow’s work with our Pediatric Endocrinologist and discuss the diagnosis and management of a variety of pediatric conditions.

Research Rotation:
Fellows will have a mentor assigned and are required to complete a Quality Improvement Project and a Research Project at the end of their training.

Procedures:

  • FNA Clinic: Fellows are trained in Thyroid Ultrasonography interpretation, as well as on Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsies on Tuesday mornings (twice a month). We are lucky to have a Pathologist with us, who in addition of precepting the procedure, educates them on specimen adequacy.
