School of Medicine recognizes faculty achievement at annual award ceremony

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine recognized a handful of basic science and clinical faculty for their achievements during a year-end award ceremony Wednesday evening.

“This annual recognition is always a highlight of the year,” said Darshana Shah, Ph.D., associate dean for the office of faculty advancement. “These awards are unified by a belief that faculty are the heart and soul of any academic institution, and that the reputation of an academic institution is influenced in great measure upon the quality and character of the faculty.  We sincerely appreciate the countless contributions of our faculty to the betterment of JCESOM community.”

The following faculty received awards at the annual recognition event:

  • Rural Preceptor of the Year – Kimberly R. Becher, M.D., assistant professor, department of family and community health
  • Excellence in Mentoring – Dilip Nair, M.D., professor, department of family and community health
  • Excellence in Leadership – Gary O. Rankin, Ph.D., professor and vice dean for basic sciences

Dean Joseph I. Shapiro, M.D, presented the Dean’s Awards of Excellence to:

  • Clinical Care – Adrienne M. Mays, M.D., assistant professor, department of family and community health
  • Education – Farid B. Mozaffari, M.D., associate professor, department of surgery, division of plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Basic Science Research – Nalini Santanam, Ph.D., M.P.H., professor, department of biomedical sciences
  • Faculty Impact Award – Franklin D. Shuler, M.D., Ph.D., professor, department of orthopaedic surgery

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery also received the award for the “Most Published Department.”
