The West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, BCCSP,
offers these free or low-cost services to women who qualify:

  • Mammograms for women age 50 to 64
  • Pap tests and pelvic exams for women age 25 and older
  • Breast exams by a doctor or nurse
  • Colposcopy, colposcopy with biopsy, ultrasound
    and fine needle aspiration when necessary
  • Free information about how to find breast and
    cervical cancer early

Women  may qualify for these services if  they meet income guidelines and  do not have health insurance or their  health insurance does not cover the services. Brenda Thomas is the Cancer Information Specialist for Region 2 of the WV Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program. Counties included in Region 2 are  Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, Mingo and Wayne.

Incidence in West Virginia

  •  Each year from 1993-2002, approximately 130 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer.

  •  Invasive Cervical cancer was the ninth leading cause of cancer incidence among West Virginia
     women from 1998-2002.

  •  In women aged 25-44, cervical cancer was the second most commonly diagnosed cancer from
     1998-2002.

Mortality in West Virginia

  •  Each year from 1993-2002, approximately 45 West Virginia women died from cervical cancer.

  •  During 1998-2002, invasive cervical cancer was the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths
     among women aged 25-44.
