Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine

Marshall University - Huntington, WV
Message from Chairman, Robert C. Nerhood, M.D.

It is with pleasure and pride that I welcome you to our Web page for University Obstetrics & Gynecology. We are pleased to occupy the 4th floor suite of the Marshall University Medical Center. Women's health care is our particular area of expertise in the comprehensive health program offered by University Physicians & Surgeons. Fifteen ob/gyn physicians are available to provide the women's health services necessary to span a lifetime.

The obstetric program includes prenatal care, on-site ultrasound and fetal assessment  and diagnostic facilities. For those particularly complex pregnancies, there is a Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. David Chaffin, Jr., M.D. is the director of that division and has a particular interest in maternal hypertension.  Dr. Chaffin provides care for women with hypertension at the
Maternal Hypertension Center. Shailini Singh, M.D. is the director of the Perinatal Center which is accredited by American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine and is a comprehensive fetal diagnostic and fetal surveillance center.  Dr. Singh has a particular interest in pregnancy complicated by diabetes and has a separate Perinatal Diabetes program to provide care for pregnant diabetics.

The gynecologic program offers the complete range of general gynecologic services including annual well-woman exams, Pap smears, menopausal counseling and therapy and osteoporosis screening and therapy. Gynecologic ultrasound is available on site. A complete array of surgical interventions for gynecologic disorders utilizing standard and minimally invasive techniques are available. A continence center, that provides a full range of diagnostic modalities and therapies for urinary and anal incontinence in women including urodynamic studies, biofeedback modalities, electrical stimulation and surgical interventions, was opened on site in the fall of 2001. This
program is headed up by Dr. Kevin Conaway.

The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility  is headed by William Burns, M. D.  In the spring of 2004, an
assisted reproduction center was opened at Cabell Huntington Hospital. This center  offers a full range of assisted reproduction techniques such as in vitro fertilization, gamete intra-fallopian transfer, etc.

Gerard Oakley, M.D. is the director of Gynecologic Oncology. This division is based at the
Edwards Comprehensive  Cancer Center and offers surgery and chemotherapy for genital organ cancers. In addition, there is an active statewide program which promotes awareness of the early signs and symptoms and potential screening mechanisms for female genital cancers.

Thank you for you visiting our Web page. I hope we can be of service to you.
